Boston5G RIS Scenario

Boston5G RIS scenario

  • An outdoor scenario constructed based on a section of downtown Boston
  • 1 base station, 1 RIS, and a million candidate users are available for RIS applications!
  • The RIS can be used to relay the base station with the NLoS users in User Grid 2
  • Dataset is available at operating frequency 3.5 GHz and 28GHz
  • Cross-polarized antennas are available with the 3.5 GHz operating frequency

Note: This scenario is based on the Boston 5G model developed by Remcom

Key components

  • One base station (BS1) is available. The height of the BS1 is 15 m
  • Each antenna array element at the BS is an isotropic antenna
  • Cross-polarized antenna elements are available with the 3.5 GHz operating frequency
  • One RIS is available to enable RIS applications! E.g., the RIS can be used to relay the BS with the NLoS users in the right half (UG2)
  • The height of the RIS is 15 m
  • Both the BS-to-RIS and RIS-to-user channels are available!
  • The RIS is indexed as “BS2” in DeepMIMO to generate the BS-to-RIS and RIS-to user channels
  • The RIS can be also used as a BS
  • Two uniform x-y user grids (UGs): UG1 and UG2.
  • Total number of users = 965,090 users
  • The first user in every user grid is always the user with the lowest (x,y) coordinate
  • The height of all user grids is 2 m
  • Each antenna array element at each user is an isotropic antenna
  • First user grid (UG1)
    • Distributed on the left half of the scenario (Fig. 1) with a length of 220 m and width of 300 m
    • Accessed from Row 1 to Row 811 (811 rows in total)
    • 595 users per row (595 users with the same y coordinate)
    • 37 cm spacing between adjacent users
    • Number of users in UG1 = 482,545 users
  • Second user grid (UG2)
    • Distributed on the right half of the scenario (Fig. 1) with a length of 220 m and width of 300 m
    • Accessed from Row 812 to Row 1622 (811 rows in total)
    • 595 users per row (595 users with the same y coordinate)
    • 37 cm spacing between adjacent users
    • Number of users in UG2 = 482,545 users
  • The site is constructed based on a section of downtown Boston. The BS is placed in the vertical street in the middle, the RIS is placed in the right half of the scenario
  • The ITU concrete and ITU wet earth are adopted as materials for the buildings and the terrain respectively
  • The ray-tracing angle spacing is 0.25° (degree)
  • As for the propagation model, each channel path can undergo a maximum of 4 reflections before reaching the receiver
  • Cross-polarized antennas are available in a scenario with 3.5 GHz carrier frequency
  • Antennas at the BS1 and the user have the horizontal (H) and vertical (V) elements
  • The channels between the two cross-polarized antennas (H-H, H-V, V-H, V-V) are all available
  • Note: RIS (“BS2”) is not available in the scenario with cross-polarized antennas

Note

The maximum number of reflections along each propagation path is set to 4 in the ray tracing simulation.
Under this configuration, some users in the scenario do not have any propagation path with the base stations.
